There really is no definite answer. It depends on your target market and what users prefer, in a more personal sense. In Europe and the US markets, roses and jasmine are usually favored, because they have a rich and pretty distinctive perfume. In parts of Southeast Asia, ylang-ylang and jasmine are also highly accepted.

• Chamomile, meanwhile, is more like a soothing agent; it also works as an anti-inflammatory option, so it’s a solid, high-quality raw material for sensitive skin ranges and even baby care lines.  

The studies that have been backed up mostly involve lavender and rose essential oils. Breathing in those oils helps lower cortisol levels and at least partially eases stress, you know. Jasmine and ylang-ylang also give a sort of soothing effect on the nervous system, more or less. 

If you are building a product line that really sells the idea of “stress relief and relaxation”, then these groups have pretty solid evidence for how well they work, and they are easier to weave into product wording and marketing campaigns, too.

Lavender and rose essential oils show more research backing for their antibacterial properties, more or less. Even though tea tree oil is not really a floral fragrance type, it’s frequently paired with floral fragrances to boost that antibacterial effect a bit more. 

If your product actually has an antibacterial efficacy requirement, then it’s a good idea to fold the efficacy verification into the formulation stage, rather than leaving it for later. Essential oils can be taken orally in some markets ( like the dietary supplement market in the United States ), yet there are strict compliance routes regarding purity of the raw ingredients, dosage, and safety standards, and the regulations vary a lot from country to country.
