Rosemary water is the water phase collected during rosemary steam distillation. It contains water-soluble plant active ingredients and can be directly used in skincare or hair care systems. Because the aromatic active substances in rosemary hydrosol are highly diluted, its irritation is significantly lower than that of the essential oil. Therefore, in practical applications, you will find that it is easier to be accepted by sensitive skin or long-term use products.
While rosemary essential oil is a highly concentrated oil-based extract with higher active ingredient density but also stronger irritation. In the formula, you must strictly control the addition ratio and it usually needs to be used in an emulsified or diluted system.
If you are developing scalp sprays, hair loss care products, skin care products for sensitive skin, or large-capacity cleansing and care products, our rosemary water is often a more cost-effective and formula-compatible choice.
The rosemary water is produced through the rosemary plants’ steam distillation. During the production process, the high-temperature steam penetrates the rosemary leaves and stem tissues, which releases the aromatic components and active substances from the plant. After the steam condenses, it forms an oil-water mixture. The oil phase is rosemary essential oil, while the water phase is rosemary water.
We adopt the fresh rosemary as raw materials and employ simultaneous distillation to produce rosemary water. There is no secondary processing of distillation residues and no purified water, flavourings or essential oils are added during formulation. The entire process maintains a natural separation state, to preserve the plant’s trace water-soluble active ingredients to the greatest extent possible.
Their formula compatibility is quite good. It is mainly applicable to water-based systems and weakly acidic systems.
In the skincare system, you can use the rosemary water together with common active ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, panthenol, ceramides, comfrey extract, nicotinamide, etc.
In the cleansing and care system, it can also be stably compounded with amino acid surfactants, plant extracts, protein-based raw materials, and scalp care active ingredients in a stable ratio.
However, it should be noted that it is recommended for you to avoid direct high-proportion compounding with high-concentration strong alkaline systems or high-concentration fruit acid/strong acid systems. Because those may affect the rosemary hydrosol’s stability and cause a poor sensory experience for your customers.
The actual addition ratio may be adjusted according to the product type, target efficacy and regulatory requirements. The following are the commonly used reference ranges in the industry: Skin care products
- Toner / Essence Water: 50 – 100%
- Lotion / Cream: 10 – 30%
- Face Spray: 80 – 100%
- Cleaning Products (Such as Face Wash / Soap-based): 5 – 15%
Hair care products
- Scalp Conditioning Spray / Essence: 50 – 100%
- Shampoo / Hair Conditioner: 5 – 20%
- Hair Mask / Hair Essential Oil: 10 – 30%.
If you need to develop a customized rosemary water product, we can also provide specific addition ratio suggestions and formula reference plans based on its product positioning, helping to shorten your product development cycle.
To maintain the natural active ingredients and aromatic characteristics in the rosemary hydrosol, it is usually recommended for you to store the rosemary water in a cool, dry, and dark environment, and avoid exposure to high temperatures or direct sunlight for a long time.
If requiring long-term inventory or large-scale purchases, we usually suggest using light-proof packaging containers and minimizing repeated exposure to air to maintain the best stability of the product. When unopened and stored under standard conditions, our rosemary water typically retains its quality for 12 to 24 months.
